Hogwarts is Here

For those of you who do not know about Hogwarts is Here (a.k.a HiH) it is a website developed by Harry Potter fans to give all those of us who always wanted to study in Hogwarts a feel of the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or the way they put it – a Hogwarts’ education for aspiring witches and wizards thanks to the Wizengamot, the British and American Ministry of Magics and a handful of tech-friendly professors from Hogwarts.

On HiH you can enroll yourself into Hogwarts and choose a house (yes, you get to make your own choice). And if you are uncertain then you may want to try out Pottermore (an official Harry Potter website by J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. in case you are living in the Dark Age and don’t know about it already). The Sorting Hat quiz over there will get you sorted out (pun absolutely intended).

Of course, the quiz results don’t have to determine what you choose. Because I didn’t go with mine (which was Ravenclaw – for those with quick wit and incredible intelligence) and instead chose Gryffindor on HiH (for those brave at heart). But know one thing, once you have made your choice there is no going back (unless you make another account, that is).

Anyway, besides all this all new members need to open a vault in Gringotts after which “Hogwarts” sends in 101 Galleons, 7 Sickles and 4 Knuts into your vault as you are obviously muggle-born and have no wizard gold for navigating the wizard marketplace. This money would help you buy school supplies from Flourish and Blotts in Diagon Alley. But don’t go around spending it on solid gold scales or a cheese cauldron (whoever invented that?) because what you got is all you got and the only way you can make more money is by getting good grades, which brings us to the “subjects taught”.

As you start off in first year you have access to the seven subjects as described in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – Defence Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, Herbology, Potions, Astronomy and History of Magic. You can then choose to enroll in whichever subject (or subjects) you like. But of course, to pass first year you must clear all the seven subjects.

Each subject course is of 9 weeks wherein you can only access one lesson every week. You must also turn in the assignments at the end of the lesson (yup assignments, after all you are studying at Hogwarts right?). But thankfully first years have a lax schedule and do not have any submission deadlines.

Besides all this since HiH is solely run by volunteering fans, you can choose to become a professor or write a “Hogwarts” book or join the graphic designing team (if you know your salt) for creation of the website graphics (which is truly amazing, btw).

But that’s not all there is to Hogwarts is Here. Once you enroll yourself and choose a house you can enter a dorm. Each dorm has five members and it makes sense to start out by making friends with your dormmates and chat with them on your dorm feed. And if you want to be more social (obviously!) you can head over to your House’s Common Room and make more friends.

If that seems too small for your scope then head over to the Great Hall and take part in the inter-house chat (and if you get into a fight with a fellow Slytherin then know one thing – better keep your hands off the wand until you know which is the right way up). The entire thing is designed to make it easy for you to connect with other Harry Potter fans.

So on the whole I found HiH a brilliant place and you should definitely give it a twirl if you are an utter lunatic when it comes to everything Harry Potter.

Till the next time, Expecto Patronum!

-Ria.
